Jane Downes

Chair

Jane works with FDQ’s senior management team and reports to the board on the commercial activities and financial position of the business.

An independent veterinary consultant, Jane has experience throughout the supply chain, from farmers to retailers, working to improve animal health and welfare and provide the consumer with safer, sustainable food.

Having held senior positions within organisations such as the Meat Hygiene Service, the Food Standards Agency and Askham Bryan College, Jane has a unique insight into the skills, training and education needed within the food industry to produce food we can all be proud of.

As Veterinary and Technical Director of the Meat Hygiene Service Jane had responsibility for setting operational standards, including the development of training and guidance for officials and the industry as a whole. She was also an active board member of the Food and Drink Training and Education Council (ftc), a charitable organisation championing food training and apprenticeships.

Currently Jane is also Chair of the Pig Health and Welfare Council, a member of Defra’s Farm Animal Welfare Council and the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
